Maya (Hinduism) is distinctively about Hinduism. Maya (illusion) is a term which is used as a component in other religions. Certainly, there is common ground but to say that they are the same and should be merged is strange. I believe in integration, but combining the two may confuse more than help. I believe it is important not to further pigeon hole Maya as solely a Hindu concept regardless of its origin. Among Sikhs maya is a vice expanded upon extensively in the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It's bad enough that there is no reference in Wiki's definition to the significance of maya to Sikhism but to further peg maya as a Hindu concept is to further deny it's importance to Sikhism.

Perhaps they should not be merged if we have a lot to say about maya in Hinduism. However, the maya (Hinduism) article would then be seen as a subset of the maya (illusion) article. They shouldn't be overly redundant too much. - Nat Krause^(Talk!) 06:29, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is disappointing that members have voted not to merge these articles. In many many religious and philosophical concept terms, articles are broken into subcategories. This creates a one stop research article that gives a thorough overview and encompasses the subject -- including the very important shades of difference in some traditions. For example, see apperception and samadhi. As it is now, there are two articles for Maya, both mostly Hindu. Of course Hinduism would be the dominant category, but it is sad to have to go to two articles to discover the whole story of what maya is even in Hinduism. For example the Adi Shankara article (about the leading Hindu philosopher) links to Maya (illusion). You can't blame the editors as they were forced to make a choice between the two articles. Sadly, those trying to understand Shankara are robbed of the opportunity to learn the important information on the Maya (Hinduism) article that easily could be merged. I strongly suggest that we reconsider as a group merging these articles for the benefit of researchers. Nothing is gained by this division. Chris 12:44, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
