The Humungous Image Tagging Project

[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Bengali article

[edit]

Hello Mukerjee!

First of all, thanks for your input in the Bangla article. It's good to see someone actively editing different sections. I wanted to just add as a comment, however, that the romanization we've been using in the article has been made fairly systematic and consistent owing to the combined efforts of many Wikipedians to accurately describe the phonemic (not phonetic, not orthographic) system of Bengali. I noticed you reverted my edits, where I changed some of your renderings of Bengali words to reflect this romanization. I wanted to let you know that I will probably be changing these back, so as to fit with the rest of the article, and with all the other articles describing any Bengali words in English. Just thought I'd let you know - and of course if you have questions or would like to contribute to our transliteration/transcription debates, please feel free to comment on my user page. Thanks! --SameerKhan 12:45, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Right, I am aware of the difference between transliteration and transcription (I don't have my degree in phonetics/phonology for nothing!). If I have been sloppy about the words I've used, please feel free to edit. I believe that when a few of us were trying to devise a standard Romanization scheme for Bengali on Wikipedia, we were thinking of a phonemic representation (which is technically not transcription either, as a side note) as opposed to a letter-by-letter transliteration, which would be totally unhelpful for non-Bengalis. The idea was to represent the pronunciation of Bengali without getting into the phonetic details of IPA transcription. Anyhow, I'm sure you're aware of this and all... but one thing - please make sure that when you comment on my page, that you comment on my discussion page and not my homepage! Thanks :) --SameerKhan 08:27, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

We discussed this one once already, and once is enough. You and I and our friends took the East Asian material, formerly mentioned in small sections scattered over various pages, and gave it what was merited by its importance and stature, the page History of Typography in East Asia, a title worked out through consultation. References have been made to this page from all appropriate places we could think of, and if you can find some more places for a see also:, please add them. The title is sufficiently distinctive to make the meaning of the cross reference very clear: one page is discussing one tradition, the other page is discussing another. This is not a POV split--the POV is identical: there are two important traditions, and those who would learn about typography, should learn about both.

The subject you steadfastly and rightly wanted to talk about did not lose by this--it gained. Consolidate the gains, and write some more about it on its page, instead of repeating the same few paragraphs on many pages. I will gladly read what you edit, so I can learn more. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the EA article should be considerably longer, have more quotes from EA sources in translation, have a more detailed history, discuss the technology in greater detail, discuss the organization of the trade, discuss more of the major printed works, discuss the spread of the printed works into neighboring countries if there is documentation, have associated short biographical sketches of all the major participants, and a longer list of suggested English-language readings.

I've set out quite an agenda, but I have gathered from various comments and contributions that there are others here who can help. I cannot, but only benefit from what the more knowledgeable will write! DGG 03:06, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Semantics

[edit]

Thanks for that great expansion of Semantics. I've been thinking it needed an overhaul like this for a while, but never got around to it because of the scope of the enterprise. I think you've done an admirable job of compressing a lot of info in a few concise and clearly worded paragraphs. It may be a little bit skewed towards Peregrin's view on things*, but I think it is a great base to build further on. Thanks again!

Keep up the great work, — mark 19:38, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

* I'm missing the embodiment angle for example, with works like Lakoff & Johnson 1980, Lakoff 1987; and non-cognitivist Wittgenstein-inspired views on semantics like those of Sperber & Wilson and Keller (1994, 1996). But hey, I admit that that's rather whiny to say after such a great expansion. So thanks again — your work is highly appreciated!

By the way, are you aware of Countering Systemic Bias? It seems to relate to the discussion started here. You might be specifically interested in its linguistics subsection. Regards, — mark 20:22, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Art & craft development v.s technical development

[edit]
reposted from Talk:History of western typography:

History of western typography is focussed almost exclusively on typographic style and practice as an art and craft, with almost no info on technical developments. That's what Typography, for the most part, is—an art & craft, involving type style and design. Perfect.

Movable type and typefounding are dearly written-about as a separate subject in Movable type (thanks for your additions guys!) It covers the pre-history of typefounding and technical developments in the East, but has little on developments in typographic style as an art and craft—as you would expect. Perfect.

History of typography in East Asia is much the same scope as Movable type but with far less content. It's purely technical and has next-to-nothing on developments in typographic style as an art and craft, use, page effect etc, no names of typefaces or designers. Not so perfect. There is a whole new project for editors interested in filling in this gap in History of typography in East Asia. Thanks!

Remember that it doesn't have to be perfect, and you're encouraged to ignore all rules and use common sense if it results in a better encyclopedia :)

Why is movable typ in Korea mentioned in the entry, buy not earlier Chinese movable type? And in a entry like that, which concentrates on the history of movable type (as opposed to its workings), it is certainly worth pointing out, that ALL movable type today traces back to Gutenberg, who already employed the same lead, tin and antimony alloy as today (see EB, 2006, entry 'printing') My propostion is to leave only a single line in the entry (Movable type is the system of printing and typography using movable pieces of metal type, made by casting from matrices struck by letterpunches)Gun Powder Ma 13:52, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Woodcut

[edit]

Once again you have messed up the page with the edit - please look at the finished article when you do an edit, to check the result. Please correct.

I agree the article is Eurocentric. When I expanded it it from the purely technical stub I looked for stuff on Wikipedia to add but there was only the ukiyo-e article, which deals with a particular rather late genre of Japanese print. There needs to be an article on Asian prints in general (a parallel to old master print) - were there old Chinese ones? I don't even know. I would rather someone with more knowledge did this.

I don't agree about any renaming. This is a technique article, one of a number feeding from printmaking; the history section here should be brief.

I will copy the last 2 paras about the article to the talk page, Johnbod 18:33, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Metal type casting in China

[edit]
reposted from User talk:James Arboghast:

There is this paragraph at the bottom of the section (just above metal movable type in Korea):

This system was later enhanced by pressing wooden blocks into sand and casting metal types from the depression in copper, bronze, iron or tin. The set of wafer-like metal stamp types could be assembled to form pages, inked, and page impressions taken from rubbings on cloth or paper.

This belies the whole point of this section - it simply cannot be that bronze or copper were also being cast. Around 1300, tin was being cast in China - the type may have been wafer-thin - it surely failed with the inks they were using then. This sentence is too vague and sweeping... Anyone to throw some light on this? mukerjee (talk) 00:41, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mukejee. Sorry for the delay replying to this question. I've been flat-out buried under a pile of work in real life.
The info on casting in China came from John Man's The Gutenberg Revolution, chapter 4 "Something in the air", quote, "The same principal was extended to make metal letters: the wood-block was pressed into sand, and the impression used as a mould for bronze, copper, tin, iron or lead. The result was a collection of thin stamps..."
What's so vague and sweeping about that? It's a specific regarding the materials. It may sound sweeping in being all-inclusive (of the metals), if you read it that way. I rewrote the info to avoid copyvio, but otherwise technically the meaning of the passage is equivalent to that in Man's book.
How is it that, "...it simply cannot be that bronze or copper were also being cast." ? John Man may have got the details on casting materials incorrect, or he may have got it right. If other sources contradict his account let's have them.

Barred buttonquail

[edit]

Whilst alternative English names are fair enough, it's not the intention for Wikipedia to be a multilingual dictionary, so I've removed the list. If you think about it, a species like Barn Owl would have a list of names in the languages of the countries in which it occurs longer than the article itself. jimfbleak 10:06, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I still think it's against wiki policy, but I don't want to be bloody-minded, so I accept what you have done. I think that the previous layout, with half the intro taken up with a list of foreign names was very off-putting, but I'll let it rest now. jimfbleak 12:40, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
on a separate point, several of the alternative names you mention (eg fan-tailed snipe) I have never heard in the UK or elsewhere in 20 years of birding. Perhaps you could clarify when you add them whether they are former obsolete names, or, if they are still current, where they are used? jimfbleak 12:44, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  1. I have Grimmett, Inskipp and Inskipp, Birds of India ISBN 0-691-04910-6, which is more recent. All I'm suggesting is that you consider adding something like "Common Snipe also called Fan-tailed Snipe in India", just as, for example, Rough-legged Buzzard is called Rough-legged Hawk in North America.
  2. I'm pretty sure that the Podiceps Little Grebe is an old classification, but can't source it at present.
  3. Bank Myna is red-linked under Acridotheres. It is listed in Grimmett et al and Freare and Craig, Starlings and Mynas ISBN 0-7136-3961-X. Do you want me to knock up a stub for it?

You can see the "hook" for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created on April 25 where you can improve it if you see fit. MeegsC 21:43, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I found the DYK page early in my wanderings (I've only been here a little over a week) and try to visit regularly to look for interesting articles -- especially those with a bird or biological theme. Wikipedia generates a daily list of all new articles that haven't submitted a DYK piece, and I found your article there. I hope it makes the front page!  ;-) You can nominate your own new articles too; just pick out some "Huh, I didn't know that!" bit of information (from an article written in the last five days) and write a DYK under 200 characters long. শুভ দূর্গা পুজা !!!
প্রিয় Mukerjee,

Hi, I just saw your new article. It seems like a great award to have an article about. Just wanted to point out that the main source on the WWF website says that the award was established in 2006: http://worldwildlife.org/about/gettyaward/ Now that can't be the case because they also have a list of recipients from long before 2006. Just wondering if you knew of another source that could support the 1974 date. Thanks, Darkspots (talk) 17:29, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The new information makes it completely clear. Nice article start. Darkspots (talk) 11:43, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mukerjee. I listed your article about Lakhbir Singh Brar Rode for deletion. I send you this message in case you may wish to change the article or debate the topic. Regards, Lester 05:19, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Got your message. I hate to list an article for deletion, as I know it takes a lot of work to get an article up there. It's just that it seems a fairly weak link that he had anything to do with blowing up a plane, and the major news organizations don't appear to be following that possibility. If you think the article should stay, you may wish to post a comment >>Here<< at the discussion page for its deletion. If you haven't posted on one of those pages before, check the formatting of other articles listed for deletion. Usually people start with either Keep or Delete in bold type, followed by their reasons for keeping or deleting. It won't be up to me to decide. Other people will leave comments there. Orphaned non-free image (Image:Manu-Sharma.jpg)

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:Manu-Sharma.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Sdrtirs (talk) 22:59, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a little ironic you accuse me of unilateral decisions when myself and Stifle are both redirecting the article, but you are the only one restoring it. I have addressed your points on the talk page- in fact, you have failed to reply to me. J Milburn (talk) 17:49, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I really can't see how he is notable outside the context of the event. WP:BLP1E applies — cover the event, not the person. Stifle (talk) 10:36, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still a little concerned about the issue- I can see that he has lasting significance, but I feel that the lasting significance is for the case, not for him personally. He appears to have two weak claims of notability, which, even when combined, do not, I feel, count for much. I respect you as an editor- never once has it crossed my mind that you are a poor editor or have anything but the encyclopedia's interests at heart- we've just disagreed over policy interpretation. AFD

[edit]

The best way to save an article for deletion is to get it featured. It may be difficult in this case, but using FA methodology can't hurt. I'll copyedit the Manu Sharma article, could you please add the references? We have to move quickly before the five day limit expires. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:13, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your "leave a message" bit on top of this page points to the talk page of PK Niyogi. Please correct it.
About the article, try and avoid expanding too much of the trial on the page, especially in the lead. If it's covered in the trial page, you only need to make sure that a summary is present here focussing on Sharma. Do expand on his appeal, Ram Jeth'ni and format the sources by using the cite templates. This should blunt the opposition.
conviction is viewed --> viewed by whom?
Remove (the most common tactic employed by the powerful in legal cases[1]) -- tangentially-related text
Also, if you can get more personal stuff on him, such as his family, date of birth, and life in jail, that would be great. =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:28, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This should help: [1], [2] =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:57, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have further copyedited the article and cleaned it up so that it is presentable. Try listing it on WP:GAC if the article is kept. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:28, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Post AFD

[edit]

Hi! I've heavily copyedited the article, and cited almost all sentences. What's missing is his date of birth and the number of siblings. To save an article, remember this: you have to make it as feature-article worthy as possible, and cite as much as credible sources as you can. By doing so, I effectively blunted some of the nominators original points. You write well, but sometimes the tone needs to be more encyclopedic and neutral. So, I hope to see you coming up with FAs in the future :)

I've already listed the article for GA status, let's see if it can get through. Once this passes the GA, it going to be very difficult for anyone to list it on AFD again. And if somehow, this article can pass FA, consider an AFD impossible. =Nichalp «Talk»= 16:44, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Sharad Shamman page is not supposed to be for a single year's winners or for a single Puja Pandal. The logo uploaded is temporary, as soon as i find a picture of the conch award i'll upload it.

If i have to update any winner picture, i would update a pandal which has won many times, like Adi Ballygunge. Suruchi Sangha has won APSS only two times compared to 5 times by Adi Ballygunge --Legolas2186 (talk) 10:19, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mukherjee, the pages for Durga Puja 2001 - 2006 are not created. I think we should create those pages and update them with pictures. Minor edits

[edit]

Please remember to mark your edits as minor if (and only if) they genuinely are minor edits (see Help:Minor edit). Marking a major change as a minor one is considered poor etiquette. The rule of thumb is that only an edit that consists solely of spelling corrections, formatting changes, or rearranging of text without modifying content should be flagged as a 'minor edit.' Symbol (formal)

[edit]

I don't understand what you are trying to do with your new article Symbol (formal). Symbols are just elements of the alphabet. They can be virtually anything, although we tend to think of them as things we can write on paper. They are, however, not usually strings of elements of alphabet. In other words: A symbol is not usually a string of symbols, and claiming it is certainly doesn't contribute to an understanding of the concept. Whenever this is done, it is best thought of as encoding the symbols of one alphabet into strings of symbols of another.

I don't think we need an article for this term at all. It is defined in formal language. That seems to be enough. Hans Adler 10:19, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Mukerjee! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 414 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

A tag has been placed on Hari Shankar Tiwari, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. 147.70.242.54 (talk) 21:01, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you. [3] Beeblebrox (talk) 23:30, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Swenson-butterfly-iconograph unconscious-came-a-beauty dotumche.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. k-median problem

[edit]

I am puzzled by the difference between the k-median problem as you have described it, and k-means clustering. Your new article says the former seeks to minimize the sum of squares of the distances. If you had said the sum of the distances, rather than the sum of their squares, then the word "median", rather than "mean", would make sense. Michael Hardy (talk) 02:35, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

[edit]
Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

What's New?
Current proposals and discussions
  • A discussion is underway here to reach a consensus regarding the use of Indian number names (lakh, crore etc.) in Wikipedia articles. Please participate and add your comments.
  • A discussion is in progress here in order to determine whether non-Western (including Indian) forms of classical music should be referred to by the nomenclature of art music instead of classical music. Please participate and add your comments.
  • Watchlist the Articles for Deletions page for India related discussions. Opinions from more Indian Wikipedians are required in many of the discussions.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Members section of WikiProject India. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 2 – (July 2010)). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Looking forward toward more contributions from you!

Hey. I noticed this article and felt that it was worthy to get a DYK mention. Since the article is heavily-biased towards negative facts, I submitted a neutral sounding nomination. Here it is:

I am taking the liberty to send you some links to authenticate my claims about her.

Harper Collins her publisher http://www.harpercollins.co.uk/Authors/8862/anjali-joseph

Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saraswati-Park-Anjali-Joseph/dp/0007360770

The Daily Telegraphs Top 20 under 40 novelists in England http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/7835258/Are-these-Britains-best-20-novelists-under-40.html

if you do a google search on her you will find over 200000 pages dedicated to her

dear LL:
I haven't heard of her, but I encourage you to take a stab at creating an Anjali Joseph page yourself. It is passionate people like you who matter in Wikipedia. Just take a few minutes and start with any small page on wikipedia as template - e.g. Anjum Hasan - and copy paste it with changes to create a new page for Anj Joseph. You can then add these links in the text as references for facts in the article. mukerjee (talk) 07:26, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:24, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Gopala–Hemachandra number has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This is a trivial variation on Fibonacci numbers, without enough independence to warrant a separate article, and the phrase "Gopala–Hemachandra number" does not appear anywhere in the mathematical literature making a redirect from here to Fibonacci also problematic. This article seems to exist only for the purpose of pushing nationalist claims of priority that are sourceable but also disputed in the literature. The Fibonacci number article has a more complete history of this dispute, so the material here does not need to be merged there.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. —David Eppstein (talk) 05:32, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Living persons

[edit]

I've removed a large quantity of links and commentary from your user page, because you were using your user page to describe at least two of these (maybe) living people as "frauds" or "criminals". That's not what userspace is for; especially if the statements are unsourced or poorly sourced. Please do not restore the material until you have removed all statements of this nature from it.

There is also a current discussion at the biographies of living persons noticeboard about your edits to Arun Prakash. Having briefly reviewed the edits you made, they seemed weakly sourced for allegations of this nature. Please take the time to review Wikipedia's policy about biographies of living persons. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 09:31, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As you've restored a version of the list that still makes dubious assertions about at least two living people, I've raised this issue in a separate section at WP:BLPN#Using userspace to call living people without convictions, "criminals". --Demiurge1000 (talk) 09:44, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the mention of the word "criminal" and "liar" from a few listings. Please note that these labels have to meet adhere to our WP:BLP policies. The policy is applicable all over Wikipedia and not just article space so please do not use these labels. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 09:53, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Stories Project

[edit]

Hello,

My name is Victor Grigas, and I'm a storyteller at the Wikimedia foundation. We're telling stories of Wikipedia users, editors, donors, programmers and staff to paint a picture of who uses Wikipedia - for the 2011 fundraiser.

I am in the process of planning a trip to India to gather stories from Indian Wikipedians in face-to-face interviews (possibly on video).

My primary goal is to conduct 15-20 interviews, and hopefully enough of my interviews will make compelling stories that will effectively solicit donations from the public. These stories may also be used for other communication purposes by the foundation.

I found your userpage on a list of prolific Wikipedians and thought I’d reach out to you. Prolific editing is always a good story to tell!

If you are interested in participating, please contact me via my email:

Thank you for your time!

The article Carl d'Silva has been proposed for deletion because, under Wikipedia policy, all newly created biographies of living persons must have at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. —Darkwind (talk) 08:09, 9 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a source for it? ALso we can remove the last column as its mostly empty and adds nothing,. Further, can we transclude it onto the page as its massive for the page size.Lihaas (talk) 07:19, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Couple of things: we dont need 2007 as its not relevant to this pag. it can on the 2007 election page. Also what is "c.07"? WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

[edit]

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly election, 2012

[edit]

If there is a problem with your table take it to your sandbox till you clean it do not use it on the article space.

Further do not hypocritically warn against unilateral actions and claim you are "necessitated" to take action. Your bold edit of unilaterally changing content that you re-reverted makesit hard to assume AGF, more so in the light of your warning not to do what you did, come back and discuss your changes first. You do not OWN an article and for the record i am discussing it. If need be we can get a 3O, bu i think itll be a lost cause bec ause thats what WP:SANDBOX is for as is ENGVAR/BOLD/BRD.
Itll also be futile to keep addingmore when it will have to go back to th e stable version while discussion is ongoing.(Lihaas (talk) 06:43, 13 March 2012 (UTC)).[reply]
Your edits from your contribs are flagrantly pov in wording even if legitimate. you need to review WP's WTA/NPOV, etc. It would then help the issue on your user page too pass consensus if you dont stick to one side. Further chech BRD and WRONGVERSION in order to 'discuss;' for consenssLihaas (talk) 13:19, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly election, 2012

[edit]

I do not like your threat of starting an editwar. Please commit to a useful discussion to solve the problems. I have no problem reporting you and getting you banned if you really start an editwar. And the same applies to Lihaas. Night of the Big Wind talk 20:48, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How am i at an edit war? I have replied to each and every instance of discussion...there was 2 weeks without reply to build consensus (i removed the table after sometime and moved to his sandbox when he said it was not ready and even deleted my own table template as AGF) Then after 2 weeks without comment he comes back reverts it all (which, btw, going back and seeing early i did not even change his edits back till the long period, after suggesting he does so per BRD and "warring") and discusses nothing. See the talk page, each and every section. And this is not the first time (See his user page here) and the comment above yours on his page on npov additions elsewhere. Per BRD he needs to learn to discuss and im willing to piecemeal discuss changes but there is a procedure. Further this incarnation adds a 90k table that slows down reading make it difficult for readers. WP:ARTICLESIZE (also ignored by said user)
He wants to hypocritically change everything to his version without disscussion...such large scale rewrites (when challenged at that) always need consensus discussion FIRST. He asserts something is important and then says something else is not, yet keeps the first that he agrees with and removes the second he dislikes (WP:IDONTLIKEIT)...and see the talk page, i do accomodate and i do come to agreement through discussion. (stuff like Talk:Association for Democratic Reforms is not constructive either). Also where was my "threat" of starting a war? Please see the talkpage and tell me how im not attempting a uselful discussion. where i have previously discussed and dissected every small edit...from 13 to 29 March there was no discussion from him yet a revert follows.Lihaas (talk) 04:12, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry you felt bad, it wasnt supposed to be that way. I wasnt being facetious at all but thats what sandboxes are for when stuff is not ready...ive had stuff moved to my sandbox (India-Syria relations) till it was resolved. I certainly thought we were working together well at first (i even tought your edit issue on your main page should stay on that page but jsut with rewording), then with the calling of "dont unilaterally make changes" while you insisted the same way on one version of largescare unilateral changes (which is youre BOLD right) i was little peeved as thats not how consensus works we need to resolve it. Anyhoo, ive rementioned the issues on the talk page, also kept your CM addition and party list. Lets discuss the details.
btw- i agree the list of MPs is certainly notable with just a few issues: 1. to move it to a seperate "list of..." page (where even 2007 could conceivably go) 2. remove the 2007 list and keep it at the 2007 page. its definately hard work for 400+ MPs thats why i dint do it...just did the goa listLihaas (talk) 06:51, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Sabharwal midday sab-chalta-hai 07jun26 sml.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Sabharwal midday sab-chalta-hai 07jun26 sml.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. The article Mukul Deva has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

-- Patchy1 11:02, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help on Articles

[edit]

I created the article Prabodh Chandra Sengupta and posted the little I know about him though I am sure there is plenty reasons to belief the coverage can be improved. Going through the diverse field of your edits I am fairly convinced you will surely not upset me. I have become literally a fan of you. Please help me finding source for the biography of the Shahi Imam of Tipu Sultan Mosque Maulana Noor ur Rahman Barkati. I want to include in the article his involvement in Politics with Mamata Banerjee. There is much to be done in the field of Politics of India and Indian mathematics. Please help. Solomon7968 (talk) 17:19, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Solomon, I have semi-retired from wikipedia for more than a year now. I only login from time to time. Prabodh Chandra Sengupta was completely unknown to me - but his works are so unavailable - both in print and in e-media. we need to try to scan them and put them up if we can (it's now 50+ years since authors death in 1962). I agree with you completely... we need to do more on Indian politics. Perhaps a user group would help. As for the other names, I am not really aware of the links to mamata etc. Re: news on Mamata, I feel an article should be there on the killing of police officer Tapas Chowdhury, where the murder was seen live on TV, and the MLA Munna. Thanks and keep in touch. mukerjee (talk) 03:13, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally the link given to the "AryabhaTiyA" from the PC Sengupta page is not to his work, but to the widely-disseminated translation by Clark (1930).mukerjee (talk) 03:20, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There was no article on Clark, so I started it. He served as the second Wales Professor of Sanskrit at Harvard and editor of the Harvard Oriental Series. Any chance you can expand the articles (the biography and Wales Professorship) or fill the redlink Harvard Oriental Series? Solomon7968 17:14, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

References for the Nachiketa article

[edit]

Mukerjee, I noticed you added a list of items in the Nachiketa article that also appear in Gupta, R. K. “Soul, The Eternal Being,” Spirituality and Us, 2014, [4]. By now, it is possible Gupta quoted Wikipedia without reference, but you gave no reference for the list, either. Do you have a reference? If not, do you think it is appropriate to use gupta?

Someone later changed all of the "self" to "soul" in the list, again without reference. I can change that and add the reference, but I hate to get into an area about which I know nothing. Tom Butler (talk) 23:49, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mukerjee,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Lithopsian and it's nice to meet you :-)

I wanted to let you know that I have tagged an article that you started, Mitrasen (disambiguation) for deletion, because it is unnecessary and disambiguates only a single page.

If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Lithopsian}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

The article Filatex India has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:NCORP. Only stocks related news available. Companies listed at NSE etc don't become notable on their own. They still need to abide by the guidelines.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
