Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/S&S Deli

Non-notable. Boston restaurant that seems to be only locally notable. Awards and news clippings on their site[1] are all from local media, as seems to be the case with most of the search hits. Name is also problematic, as the formal name is S&S Restaurant, and there are other establishments in other states with the same name. From the same contributor as 1369 Coffeehouse above, and a bunch of red-links at Inman Square. Very new user, and seems well intentioned (first edit was in the Tutorial sandbox), but these two articles are just too much 'local interest'. Niteowlneils 21:32, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Delete unless better case can be made for notability. Locally notable and Wikinotable only. I never heard of the place until a few days before July 31st, 2004, when it was the site of a Boston meeting with Jimbo Wales and other local Wikipedians. I don't think that being the site of a Wikimeet automatically rates an article. Dpbsmith (talk) 00:25, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Delete: This was created by the same IP as the previous (the coffeehouse), I believe. Like that article, this one knows how to be encyclopedic. The institution here is more notable than the coffee house, but it is also a local phenomenon that fails my own test of notability: Will someone from another city have heard of it and want information on it? (And by "city" I mean city some distance away. Around Boston there are a lot of "cities" that are basically touching Boston.) Geogre 00:36, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- While I love the S&S and eat there as often as possible, I don't see anything in this entry that'd prove widespread notability. It's a local institution, yes, and perfect for any local wiki that could be created, but the place doesn't have any major historical significance that other Boston area restaurants can claim, such as Durgin Park or even Legal Seafoods. I vote delete but I'll make it up to them by going out for knishes this weekend. Spatch 20:04, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Keep. This is a famous restaurant. anthony (see warning) 15:05, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Anthony, couldn't you at least add something beyond the flat assertion that it is famous? In another context I was willing to state that I thought the singing group Celtic Elvis was borderline-notable for the simple reason that I had heard of them. Can you say you heard of the S&S before reading this article? Where and in what context? Dpbsmith (talk) 15:20, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I'm not going to waste my time proving that something is famous when no one else finds the time to prove that it is not. Articles should be innocent until proven guilty. Besides, there is no standard for what is famous or not anyway. It's purely opinion, so there's no sense in trying to "prove" an opinion. anthony (see warning) 15:45, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- OK. Evidence bearing on notability: The AAA Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island TourBook for 2001 lists these restaurants for Cambridge, MA are: Bisuteki Japanese Steak House, Buttonwood Cafe, Legal Sea Foods, Rialto, Salamander, Sandrine's Bistro, and "not inspected by AAA, listed for your information only," the East Coast Grill and Raw Bar, the Elephant Walk, and Upstairs at the Pudding. The statement that these restaurants are listed in this guidebook is verifiable and not simply my opinion. Dpbsmith (talk) 19:55, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I don't understand what you're getting at. Are you saying that any deli not listed in the AAA guidebook is not notable? Are you saying that any restaurant that is listed is notable? Seems like either of these assertions are opinions. anthony (see warning) 00:40, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- Keep (my vote for the time being). Surely a short piece on an almost hundred-year-old restaurant warrants inclusion - if the following is true of course. The restaurant has been owned and operated by the Edelstein family for almost a century zoney ▓ ▒ talk 11:26, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I found a page which says its been around since 1919 [2]. Seems to be true. anthony (see warning) 00:55, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- It may have been around for a long time, but I don't see it being notable outside the Boston area. There's a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles called The Pantry that's been open 24 hours a day since 1922 and is famous for its playfully rude waiters and homestyle cooking. I haven't looked for an article about The Pantry, but if there isn't one, it's not worth an entry. Delete for other reasons stated. - Lucky 6.9 19:30, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Playfully rude? Oh, for a minute I thought you said "playfully nude." Maybe I need to change my monobook default font. Speaking of playfully rough-mannered waitstaff, I note that we have no article about the much-more-famous-than-the-S&S Boston eatery Durgin-Park, either... - I say Keep. I myself am planning to write an article on Katz's Deli (in NYC) one of these days. T-bomb 00:53, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Comment: On a side note, was Votes for deletion/West 23rd Street removed from this page because I expanded the article, or because it got overlooked? And back on topic, I think RustyCale's comment ("if articles like Rosedale, Oklahoma are allowed on Wikipedia, this one should too") applies to S&S Deli too. T-bomb 00:56, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)
