Hosni Mubarak
Hi,
I copied the script from the biography article (which I am hoping is accurate). I think it adds something to the list of Heads of State to see the names as they would appear written locally, whilst not detracting from the fact that the entry in the English Wikipedia is aimed at English readers.
I would really like to be able to do so for the entire list (and for other Arabic-speaking nations) but my knowledge of arabic is limited to matching the roman letters to the Arabic - and that in itself is not sufficient - so any assistance would be very much appreciated. --JohnArmagh 04:47, 16 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I just noticed you have a picture of yourself on your user page. Would you consider adding it to Wikipedia:Facebook? →Raul654 21:31, Sep 18, 2004 (UTC)
Arabic names
I just finished translating the names into Arabic script as per your request on the Arabic Wikipedia. I have some last names appearing as (...) since I don't know their Arabic names.
Regards,

I just updated the page you requested (Arabic script). I will finish the rest tonight. Alrasheedan

Ahmed al-Ghamdi
I see that you've done a lot of work on the Ahmed al-Ghamdi article but there was only a reference to the en article at the sep11:Ahmed Alghamdi article. Perhaps you'd like to copy your extensive work to sep11:Ahmed al-Ghamdi as well as here, so the September 11 place has it as well? Jamesday 09:31, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

New report request
Topbanana, I love the reports you've put together! I have a request. Could you list all articles that contain "ISBN:"? It's a common mistake when listing an ISBN to say "ISBN: 0-000000-0" instead of "ISBN 0-000000-0", and there's no way to search for this currently. Thanks, – Quadell (talk) (help)[[]] 19:32, Sep 23, 2004 (UTC)
- Easily done. See User:Topbanana/Reports/This article may contain a badly formed ISBN reference. - TB 10:00, Sep 24, 2004 (UTC)

Deaconess
Can you review the changes you made to Deaconess? I am unsure what was intended. One set of quotes was replaced by question marks, and an apostrophe was changed to a question mark as well. I don't see what that has to do with correcting the ISBN. Thanks in advance. --Robbie Giles 05:06, Sep 26, 2004 (UTC)

Deleting liberal leaders category
I have seen you deleted a lot of categories of liberal leaders. There was a discussion on liberal leaders in the US, but you also deleted categorizing in other countries. E.g. Paul Hymans was clearly a Belgian liberal leader. SO is Verhofstadt? Shouldn't you have dicussed that somewhere?
Liberal leaders 2
The discussion was about liberal leaders in the US and - as you rightly state - there was a more or less general consensus. But the situation outside the US is different and there it is motsly more easy to put on a list who are liberal leaders. If you had made a notice to delete all the categories, I would have had the possibility to place the names in an annotated list. Now I checked the remaining categories, but I didn't have the possibilitie to save the names. At the moment I checked the remaining categories and have made an annotated list at my user page. -- Gangulf 21:01, 26 Sep 2004 (UTC) (BTW, normally i use the sign, but I forgot in in the last message, I am sorry)

Nice photo. Could you either place it into the public domain or choose a license so that others may be able to freely use your photo? Ydorb
- Good point. GFDL is the default. Since most people just check the box, there seems to be no consensus that unlabelled images are GFDL. I added the { {GFDL} } thing so that it gets categorized properly. Ydorb 22:35, Sep 29, 2004 (UTC)

Australian aboriginal flag
Read the description text for Image:Australian aboriginal flag.png. All I did was convert the image to a PNG. You want User:GrahamN. -- Cyrius|✎ 19:35, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- The original was a BMP, and has since been deleted, and the history is not available. If you want to know where that image came from, you're going to have to ask GrahamN. All I did was fulfill a conversion request, and I made that clear so people like you would leave me alone. -- Cyrius|✎ 20:24, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Sorry I'm grumpy, but when I said all I did was convert the image, that's what I meant. I don't know where it came from other than GrahamN uploaded it. I don't even know if that's a real flag. When I said "people like you", I meant "well-meaning but annoyingly persistent". You shouldn't bug people for information after they did a simple image conversion, because they likely don't have it. -- Cyrius|✎ 02:08, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Disambig template
I think it should stay protected for the reasons I gave at Template talk:Stub#Unprotect, but the question of "how can changes be appropriately made to these templates" really comes down to common sense. There's no strict rule for when admins can or cannot edit a semi-permanently protected page, and I don't think such a rule ought to exist since the cases vary so widely. Image:Arabic alphabet.png
Regarding the copyright status of Image:Arabic alphabet.png: this is an adapted version of an image on the German-language Wikipedia, taken in the assumption that the original was GFDL-compliant. I'll try to track down the original. -- Karada 08:42, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
The original de: image de:Bild:Arabic.png appears to have been deleted. I'm trying to find out why. -- Karada 09:11, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
The de: deletion log reads: 10:14, 30. Jun 2004 Mathias Schindler Bild:Arabic.png wurde gelöscht (requested. Raymond) , that is to say 10:14, 30. Jun 2004 Mathias Schindler Bild:Arabic.png was deleted (requested. Raymond) Not sure what the reason for deletion was, though. -- Karada 09:25, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Note that de: also has a much more elaborate image at de:Bild:ArabischesAlphabet.png, which definitely has a GFDL label attached. -- Karada 09:30, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Re:Opal Pendants
Thanks for uploading Image:Opal.pendants.250pix.050203.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.)
I immediately noticed a strange error in the file name I used, the gem is actually amber not opal. However that doesn't matter because this pic can be deleted. Here's why: when the new image syntax came in a few months ago the thumbnails we used to have to make ourselves become irrelevant because the Wiki software does that job. This is one of those hand-made thumbnails so the image can be chucked. Thanks for writing - Adrian Pingstone 19:26, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Re: Image:Ooozaru.jpg
Following up your message in my Talk page I tagged the image in question as "fair use", since it is a screen shot/movie still used to illustrate the description given in the article. Thanks very much for notifying me and I apologise in advance should my tag choice turn out to be incorrect; I find copyright policies and protocols rather perplexing.Sinistro 19:49, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Copyright Questions
1. For the images Image:SeaServiceResRib.jpg and Image:SeaServiceRib.jpg, did you create these? Or are they perhaps in the public domain?
- Those two images were created through my duties as a military historian at the National Personnel Records Center. They should have the PD-USGov tag. I will change it when I have the chance.
2. There is an unsolved question that I thought you might know the answer to. If a soldier is on duty, and he takes a personal photograph with his own camera, does he own the copyright to the photo (since he took it, and he wasn't ordered to take the picture) or is the picture in the public domain (since it was produced by the U.S. government, in a sense.)
- Personal photos taken my members of the U.S. Armed Forces are thier opwn property and they have the release authority on them. Photos taken which are put into offical records, such as service record photos and investigation type pictures (accidents, mishap determination, etc) are property of the U.S. government and are usually restricted for release. However, a photo from a service record is public inforamtion under the Freedom of Information Act. All of that that I just typed applies to the U.S. only. I have no idea about other countries.

Hey, I've noticed over at WP:PUI you routinely use (c) as shorthand for the word "copyright"... Anyhow, I just wanted to let you know that ALT+0169 will render the copyright symbol, ©. Just another worthless piece of information floating around in my head, might as well share it with someone. blankfaze | (беседа!) 13:03, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Liz Leyden (Openbill Stork)waived the copyright for the pictures on her website. Any other image I've uploaded with LL at the end will be from the same site. jimfbleak 17:06, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Image:Openlogo-nd-50.png
I don't know anything about that image; I moved it onto the site to replace one that was being linked offsite. IIRC this was uploaded back when all images had to be uploaded at meta.wikipedia.org, and the policy finally changed to allow uploads here, so I was moving them over. Then I stopped because some of them weren't tagged as far as copyright. It looks to me like |the Debian logo, so I'd wager it's under copyright and we'd have to determine if it's fair use to post it. But since it's not being used, the point is moot, huh? Koyaanis Qatsi 01:07, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Re: Image copyright questions
First of, IANAL...
- Suppose person A were to take an image that was copyright person B, and upload the image to Wikipedia. Suppose further that A claimed (falsely) that it was copyright person A. If person B complains, is Wikipedia liable?
The only way that I see that Wikipedia would be liable is:
- if Wikipedia doesn't complain with a cease-and-desist order given by the court
- if Wikipedia continues to display the image knowing that person B was indeed the owner (immediately liable)
- Concerning the above, if a third party C were to release a CD version of wikipedia, would party C be liable?
Same answer as above.
- Suppose photograph D were copyrighted, but including this photograph in an encyclopedia would clearly be a fair use of the image in the United States. Does the image submitter need to know if this would be considered a fair use of the image in the U.K.?
No, the submitter doesn't need to know that information.
- Concerning the above, how about China or Sudan? What image fair usage laws must an image uploader be wary of?
He must be wary of the laws were the images will be stored (ie: were the server resides).
- If an image was created by the United States government or a branch thereof, can an uploader safely assume the image is safe to upload? (e.g. passport photographs, prison "booking" photos, FBI crime scene photos)
See 17 USC § 105.
- If the creator of an image is unknown, but the image was distributed by the United States government or a branch thereof, can an uploader safely assume the image is safe to upload? (e.g. Images on FBI "wanted" posters, etc.)
Never seen the government displaying images without the proper author acknowledgment.
By the way, some of these questions have already been answered. User:Alex756 is a lawyer if you didn't know.

Hey, Image:Meals title.png is a modified version of Image:Cuisine title.jpg, which had no usage restrictions. List of songs whose title does not appear in the lyrics
In the article "List of songs whose title does not appear in the lyrics"
you removed "Subterranian Homesick Blues" because it was "self referential".... I do not see the words in the lyrics. Perhaps I am missing something, but I would like to see it added back in because I think it was a mistake to remove it.... then again I might be wrong. Anyhow, I would appreciate if you looked it over again. Thanks! [posted by anonymous user]
- Hi, thanks for asking. The article says:
- Excluded from the list are. . . titles that are descriptive of the song and therefore not expected to appear in the lyric. Examples of this include: "59th Street Bridge Song", "Crossroads Blues", "Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag". . .
- So I thought the name "Subterranian Homesick Blues" described the song. That's why I called it "self-referencial". – Quadell (talk) (help)[[]] 23:13, Oct 8, 2004 (UTC)
Iceland map image
Regarding the Map of Iceland I uploaded to the page þingvellir: I don't know under what license these images. I simply copied the image from the icelandic wikipedia here. It had no license information on the icelandic page, so I put none on the english wikipedia.
However, since you asked me, I did a little investigating. There is a copyright notice in the image to "Kardjila gis@bofh.is http://gis.bofh.is/ornefnaskra". I went back the the Icelandic wikipedia, and checked out the webpage too, and it looks like the person who uploaded the image may also be the person who created it, or at least affiliated with the institute that created it. and there are dozens of other maps of iceland to be found on the icelandic pedia. That peson is GISLANDIA. Actually, looking at the website, this looks like it might be an account for the Iceland Gazeteer.
So I left an inquiry to GISLANDIA on the user's talk page. I will let you know if i hear anything. There is also an email address, so I might also shoot off an email. I don't speak any icelandic though, so if this person doesn't speak english, well, I don't know what to do then.

CD Rom orangutan pic (and perhaps others)
Hi! I've been going around Wikipedia, trying to add image copyright tags to images that don't have them. I stumbled upon Image:Orangutan.jpg, and I read that the page says "Orangutan image, from a CD-ROM. All images are free for licensing according to the disc." I'm not sure what that means. Hi! I'm in a bit of a dilemma as to what licence this image (Image:Oradea.jpg) should have. I uploaded it after I saw it on the Romanian and Netherlandic Wikipedias. Problems with an administrator
Hi Quadell I'm having problems dealing with a biased administrator User:Jayjg. See history and Talk page at Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights for an example. He follows me around, reverts many edits dealing with the Mideast, redirects pages and nominates pages for Votes for deletion in an effort to promote his Zionist POV on Wikipedia pages. What can be done about admins who abuse Wikipedia NPOV policy and harass other Wikipedians? Alberuni 17:48, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- Jayjg continues to stalk me all over Wikipedia reverting and deleting most of my work because he can't stand to see NPOV edits to pages related to Israel. He is extremely biased and unpleasant to deal with. He is trying to ban me because he disagrees with my political opinions although he couches his efforts in legalistic terms. I think this is an example of why Wikipedia has sucha pronounced pro-Israeli slant. People like Jayjg try to make life difficult and run anyone who disagrees with them out of Wikipedia. I'd appreciate your support. Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Alberuni. Thanks. Alberuni 15:36, 14 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for your sage advice Quadell. I've been pleading with Alberuni to work co-operatively, and to talk things over with me on my Talk: page, and even been very positive about some of his edits, but as yet to no avail. Jayjg 20:47, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)
