I'm guessing that "Nieuwpoort" is Flemish for Newport. If so, should it be added to that (disambiguation) page? -- Sam

answer: The litteral translation of "nieuwpoort" is 'new gate'. It's easy to understand when you look at the areal picture, which shows the coast "Nieuwpoort Bat"(Newport to Bathe") and the canal (the gate)leading to the city itself, located in the upper left corner of the same picture. The city prides itself as the only city in Belgium that was not conquered by the german forces during WW1. Indeed, under heroic circumstances, locals opened the dams and therefore set the entire city and immediate vacinities under water.
