Run-ins

[edit]

Forgive my memory, but could you tell me what the "run-ins" with me you've had that you alluded to on RfA? The only one (1 - not plural) I recall was you jumping in on an minor flare-up between Jor and me on USA PATRIOT Act which we quickly worked out, after which you protected the page. We both agreed there was no major issue and were puzzled by your seemingly premature reaction (and haughty tone). Is this what you're referring to? VV 02:41, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

yes, that's right. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 19:09, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Salton Sea

[edit]

I've done a major re-tooling of Salton Sea, please look it over if you have a chance.

Kaszeta 18:28, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Dude, you've done a great job (on something that's been on my personal TODO list for six months). You've inspired me to do a few fixes in miscellaneous related places, and I'll make a few tweaks to what's there. I'll probably leave some suggestions etc on the talk page too. THanks ! -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 19:14, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Glad to be of service. I've got a bunch of Salton Pictures, and a fair amount of material about the surrounding area (like Slab City) that I'll try to locate in my vast archives at home and add in, since I've always been fascinated with the area. -- Kaszeta 20:17, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Akins

[edit]

Thanks for spotting and fixing the changes to the clans page; I've reverted User:The clan akins association's POV edits to Clan Akins three times today, so I'm stopping. They just keep re-making the changes anyway :/ Marnanel 17:33, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I've asked him to discuss his changes rather than just deleting stuff. He seems to have stopped editing for now - if/when he comes back, we'll see what he has to say. It's actually kind of an interesting story, although I don't know if it counts as encyclopedic (on the "no original research" principle). If he does come back, and continues his change-and-not-talk practice, make sure not to exceed your 3-reverts a day limit. Derek and I are both keeping a weather eye on things too. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 17:48, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

==At which Cato, NY, are the drumlins?== (copied from Pollinator) In the caption for Image:Drumlin4029.JPG, you say they're at Cato, NY. Which of the following would you think the better link to which to resolve that:

(they seem to be almost the same place, so maybe I'm just being pedantic). Thanks -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 01:24, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I would think the town. I'm not sure the village is even incorporated. But I don't know as it makes much difference. The drumlins are spread throughout the area, and, if I recall correctly, the village is partially on one itself. Pollinator 11:46, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)

Hello Finlay. As far as I can tell, your cut'n'paste moves for my user are complete. Do you have any outstanding? Regards Ian Cairns 23:17, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Um, I haven't done a single one. They've been languishing on my to-do list all this time. When someone fixes a cut'n'paste move, you should see the histories of the two articles merge. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 23:20, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Pictures from other language wikipedias

[edit]

I'm not sure who to ask, but where other language wikipedias have nice pictures, for example of European animal such as the Common toad and Common frog, what is usual practice for using those picture in the English version if we don't have a picture or theirs is better? Does one link to them, or copy them in to the English version and translate the caption? Of course my frogs and toads are English croaking so more deserving of a place in the English edition! Rutland

[edit]

Gone to Rutland ? What sort of an excuse for an excuse is that? If I can contribute to the Wikipedia from the southern Sahara, I fail to see why you can't contribute from Rutland. Come on, man, there are few enough Scots contributors as it is. We need you. -- Derek Ross | Talk 06:57, 2004 Oct 5 (UTC)

Heh....Finlay, you always did have a flair for the jokes that amused a select few and confused so very many. :-) I've been meaning to write you to ask where you'd gone, but I think I secretly hoped you'd bounce back on your own and add your trademark humor back into this place....liven things up a bit. Well, it seems you've "gone to Rutland", for good or ill. :-) I hope you return soon, but if not, I want you to know you'll always remain one of my favorite Wikipedians, if only for your irrepressible ability to cheer me up (though your many other contributions here are estimable). May you wander the earth, wherever you roam, filled with that McWalterian joie de vivre, and drop by every now and then. I hope our paths cross again someday, in real life or on the Web - if I ever plan to go up Scotland way, I'll drop a note here to give you advance notice of when that is, and whether I'll be on the high road or the low road. Best wishes always, Jwrosenzweig 22:56, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Jacobite split? Copyvio pics?

[edit]

Having merged Jacobite Rebellions into Jacobitism, I'm thinking of adding some more on the poltical/religious aspects and wonder if it would be a good idea to hive off the military aspects, leaving a ruthlessly pruned summary in Jacobitism. The war in Ireland would stand alone, and the other fights could come under Jacobite Risings. This would probably suit categorisation and help keep articles short, but lose the context a bit. Any comments? Another issue is copyvio: it's not clear to me if I can use images of paintings and drawings over a century old, or do we need permission of the publisher of the images before say scanning them and uploading?? dave souza 19:30, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Doune Castle

[edit]

Hi, I saw your nice photo on David Stirling, and I was wondering if you also have photos of Doune and Doune Castle? We have one photo of the castle, but it doesn't show the location very well, and we've got nothing on the village or the museum. - Middenface

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. Unverified images

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. Peter O. (Talk, automation script) 22:14, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)

Re: The balance problem, and its solution

[edit]
Analogy time: You have a see-saw (that's teetertotter, you yanks). On one end is little Evette. On the other is Cletus, the fat kid (yes yes, he's the american, and before y'all complain this is wicked stereotyping, have y'all been to Walmart lately?). Cletus is big, Evette is little, so the seesaw is unbalanced and no see-sawing occurs.

See-saw is common terminology for the toy in the US. Teetertotter is mostly a term in the northern inland to upper western states whereas seesaw is dominant in areas where you are common to also hear "y'all" (and "yanks" in the American (as distinguished from yours, obviously) usage is as "Yankees" to refer to north-easterners). This is too tortuous and obscure to be effectively ironic, therefore your attempt at wittily sniping Americans ends up looking rather embarrassing for you. --TJive 08:37, 28 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

This is bull, how is my editing to reflect actual information about a certain effect vandalism?

What makes your un-needed exposure more valid than an educated view of refraining from said exposure?--MacGyver07 2 July 2005 11:41 (UTC)

You're blanking stuff you don't like, hoping you and your dozen pals can bulldoze wikipedia into doing what you want. If you don't like being called a vandal, then don't wreck perfectly good articles. If you don't think the content is appropriate, under wikipedia's standards for inclusion of content, then engage in a reasonable discussion on the talk pages. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk July 2, 2005 11:45 (UTC)
While I agree with MacGyver07 that magic should be protected from being mass-exposed on Wikipedia, I don't particularly like the way he's going about it, or the fact he's using part of my name to do it. I've asked for advice from a professional magician, which hopefully should give me some clarity about the legal protection of magic. You talked about a returning magic vandal, which surprisingly I'm not aware of. Could you provide me with some background info? - Mgm|(talk) July 2, 2005 11:54 (UTC)
There have been a flurry of people blanking the "secret" parts of various magic related articles (listed in WP:VIP). I guess from the diversity of IPs that someone has put out a general call-to-delete on some magic related website or newsgroup (although it may be one person with a plurality of accounts). Affected articles include King levitation, Out of This World (card trick), Metamorphosis trick, Spoon bending, Chinese linking rings, Cut and restore rope trick, Balducci levitation, Bullet catch, Cut and restore rope trick, and Billet reading. Frankly I don't have an opinion as to the appropriateness of this content, but his/their mass deletion tactics (rather than engaging in a discussion) clearly isn't acceptable. Unfortunately, with the exception of one person at WP:HD#Paul_Curry.27s_Out_of_this_World they've not stayed around to engage in such a discussion (and it's noteworthy that User:BarryFernelius hasn't blanked anything - I'm guessing Barry isn't the same person as the vandal(s)). -- Finlay McWalter | Talk July 2, 2005 12:07 (UTC)

My friend, even if your stay is a short one, it's good to see you. Just now on my user page I made a joke referencing you (no, of course you're not being made fun of, but go to my userpage and see for yourself) and I thought to myself that it was a shame that I won't see you around here anymore. I hope you get the chance to drop by now and then -- one of these days we should tag-team the Reference Desk together as in the days of yore, and dispense the kind of cracked wisdom that used to make my sides ache. Perhaps my jokes were not as funny as they sounded in my head, but each one of yours was a prize-winner, to my recollection. At any rate, all this is just to say "good to see your name in a signature from 2005" and I hope life goes well with you. Best wishes, Jwrosenzweig 08:22, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it was weird too. I don't think this guy has anything against me personally; likely just saw my sig on Talk:Main Page. Probably an unscrupulous newbie in 'testing phase'. I even consider Image:Pharos of Alexandria.1.jpg, which would be considered vandalism on a bathroom wall, maybe just another 'test'. The fact that this person has apparently uploaded a picture of themselves ([[:Image:DSC 0102.JPG], Image:Mcboom.jpg close-up) lends me toward the more-or-less well-meaning but unscrupulous newbie theory.--Pharos 20:14, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm always wary of pictures that look like a regular person. Sometimes it is the contributor, but sometimes they upload pictures and add them to the "asshole" page or somesuch. If they persist (i.e. if they continue spamming after they've seen that message) leave them a spam2 and finally spam3 message. Gruffalo Review

[edit]

Hey, I saw your request for opinions on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia for your Gruffalo reading. The quality is nice, and your voice is pleasant. Noise levels are non-existent; in general it is a good reading, IMHO. My two criticisms are that 1) you sound like you are whispering (almost like birdwatching commentary :), and 2) as is usually the case with whispery talking, the sound level is not very consistent, meaning that sometimes it is loud and other times soft. Sometimes the ends of sentences are swallowed. Both of these problems could be remedied by either speaking more loudly (and holding the microphone further away from your mouth), and applying some compression. Compression really does wonders, especially for voice.Cjpuffin 02:12, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment; I really appreciate it. Yep, I really am whispering :) You're quite right about swallowing the end of sentences. Hopefully with louder talking I won't need much compression (there is a bit in the Gruffalo recording, and I can hear a few wowow artifacts from it). Thanks. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 23:21, July 28, 2005 (UTC)

A Quick Message

I honestly had no bad intention when I uploaded all the pictures to this site. Honeslty if I knew how to show the licensing, showing where I uploaded the pictures from, I seriously would, but I dont know how. I am truly sorry that I have caused anybody any stress or concern to the people who run this site (I enjoy the site by the way! Big Fan :) ). If I knew how to take care of these concerns I would, the last few days I've had personal problems on my mind, and with the recent uploades I just wanted other fans of these celebs to enjoy them, I meant no harm and anger.I tried really hard to figure out how to put the information on it's location and all the important stuff, it's really hard, I guess I'm just stupid. LOL. I wont upload anymore pictures til I figure it out. PROMISE. My deepest apologies. * BlueStar 07/30/05 12:20 am

Tony Blair

[edit]

Re 3RR Message - 84.65.153.37.

Hello Finlay McWalter,a fine Scottish name. I have been trying to discuss this on the Tony Blair talk page but to no avail. If you check the edit history you will see that Dbiv reverted my post twice, once after I entered a dialogue on talk, then (to my POV - GASP SHOCK HORROR) enlisted the help of his proxy, Squeakbox, so that he didn't incur the 3rr rule.

I am sorry if this sounds like a diatribe, but it is. There is definitely a club here. My edit was a genuine attempt to clarify the sense of the issue regarding the Blair children school choice at the time in relation to the rest of that particular paragraph. Unilateral reverts by club members always seem to ensue.

How much does it cost to join this club anyway?

Best wishes. --84.65.153.37 16:59, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

By my count Dbiv reverted twice, and Squeakbox reverted twice. If either reverts a third time he too will receive the same warning you did. If either reverts four times, he will be blocked. The existance of agreement or indeed collusion between editors in one "faction" or another is neither exculpatory nor mitigatory of a three-revert-rule violation. I don't know if there's a club; no-one asked me to join one. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 17:07, August 5, 2005 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. Yes, 2 each. No doubt, if I revert a 3rd time another new user will magically appear to revert along the same lines, avoiding the 3rr for members. Anyway, I am a genuine ANON editor of many months and this experience is not unique. Enough ranting, regards --84.65.153.37 17:19, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Block

[edit]

Hi Finlay, this is an anon disruptive user, anti-Semitic (of the neo-Nazi variety), who has been causing trouble around a number of articles since April. He has used about a dozen sockpuppet accounts (confirmed as sockpuppets by the developers) and has engaged in talk-page abuse, numerous 3RR violations, and setting up abusively named accounts. The accounts have all been blocked indefinitely, but he keeps returning with dynamic IPs, which have also been blocked for various shorter lengths of time, but it has made no difference. A few of us therefore decided recently to block him for three months for the disruption, the 3RR violations, and all the previous block evasions. SlimVirgin (talk) 20:44, August 7, 2005 (UTC)

Finlay McWalter, thank you for asking. I would, however like SlimVirgin to provide the reason for the 3 month block. The reasons above are not specfic. My edits are in good faith, and anyone can review them. SlimVirgin has targeted me individually and disrupted my edits and made personal attacks from nowhere (neo-nazi, etc.), the above being evidence of that once again. Review my edits, don't take her word on it. Thanks. 69.217.121.24 03:18, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I misunderstood. I share your concern. We're not allowed to block indefinitely, so we're trying three months. Ideally, we'd like to do a range block but haven't figured out how to make it narrow enough so it doesn't affect others. SlimVirgin (talk) 20:51, August 7, 2005 (UTC)
What you say makes sense, Finlay. I'll discuss it later with the other people involved. Thanks for the input; it's very helpful. SlimVirgin (talk) 21:11, August 7, 2005 (UTC)

ASINs

[edit]

Hi, Finlay. Sorry to bother you if you don't care about this...

You commented on the little WP:VIP fracas I had over deleting ASINs; I'm trying to start a discussion about this. If you have any particular opinions about it, could you note them at User:Shimgray/ASIN? I'm hoping the community can figure out what to do about this. Thanks, Shimgray 01:20, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Los Banos

[edit]

Hi! I stumbled on your question over at RickK's talk page. Been a long time since I've been up that way, but I clearly remember the I-5/SR152 interchange as reading "Los Banos." Hope this helps. - Lucky 6.9 23:46, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Controversial editors, Jayjg and Slim

[edit]

I requested on the WP admn. board (and the noticeboard) an answer to the WP:NPA violation of these two controversial editors, but have never received it. At some point in Aug 2005, these editors decided to issue a block based on personal bias, using "disruption" as the reason. I have requested a citation of the particular edit that prompted this cycle of abuse from them. I have never gotten it, but I have gotten an escalation of abuse and blocking from them. If someone is blocked they should know the reason. The term "disruption" is the excuse, and they have never shown the exact edit that violated any of Wikipedia's rules. If there was one, let's see it. Thanks, that's all I ask for, but have yet to see it.69.209.218.98 07:22, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ibrahim the Great

[edit]

Thanks for your comment. No, there is no WP entry for him, unfortunately, since (according to family legend) he ended up doubting himself into complete insignificance :) Ramallite (talk) 17:31, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

One Baker Street is quite enough

[edit]

Thanks for spotting the second Baker Street image. You're right it is redundant, Iuploaded it by mistake with a space in the name and realised so uploaded again. I meant to delete it but forgot. Thanks again. Greaterlondoner 18:23, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Senufo languages.png

[edit]

I've updated Image:Senufo languages.png using many of your suggestions from WP:FPC. Thank you for your thorough review! — mark 19:09, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It was great, and is even better. I particularly like the halo around the smaller text labels ("Banka", etc.). I need to figure out how to do that in Inkscape. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 19:27, August 19, 2005 (UTC)
Don't know Inkscape, but in CorelDraw it's quite easily done by giving the text an outline. I would think any vector graphics editor would have such a feature. — mark 19:34, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, you're quite right. It's not a patch on the proper glow effect (Image:Wfm monument valley annotated.jpg) one gets in Photoshop, which Inkscape promises for its next release. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 19:46, August 19, 2005 (UTC)

Hello - after the 24-hour block you enforced was lifted this user has continued linkspamming articles about books. He has also vandalised a couple of articles. Perhaps you should block him again for longer? --PhilipO 20:49, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. He also vandalised Zury Ríos Sosa. I've blocked him for 48 hours this time. I'm reluctant to impose long blocks, as I'm concerned that I'll block legitimate users too. If he returns, and resumes his pattern of bad behaviour, please let me know. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:17, August 19, 2005 (UTC)

Message from Sooted

[edit]

in that case maybe you should go after robertbyrne and arwel parry for editing articles for no other reason than their political views

They haven't broken any rules. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 22:25, August 19, 2005 (UTC)

ok fine I'll accept the double standard and say no more

I think I'll just wait then for the 'special tool' Dragon's flight mentioned on WP:AN. — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 20:34, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My user page

[edit]

Hey, thanks for reverting the vandalism on my user page! Being vandalised always makes me feel kind of important... :) This guy seems a bit odd by the way - he's been vandalising the one single VfD page for thirteen hours now. ^^ - ulayiti (talk) 21:24, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The user in question has been trolling and vandalizing my user page and talk page, this article is a further attempt at harassment, and thus is a CSD. Thank you. Agriculture 23:44, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Puhleaze. I have done no such thing. If you look at the history of my edits to your user main page, you'll see that my only edit there was to revert vandalism. I'm not trying to harass you. If you want me to do something, you should try asking. Hipocrite 23:45, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In another user's userspace, neither is a criterion for speedy deletion. Hipocrite may request that page for speedy deletion; you may not. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 23:46, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
Yet another admin who supports trolls harassing other users I see. Well we'll do this the hard way then. I'd note point #3 qualifies the page for Speedy Delete. Agriculture 23:54, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's clearly not "pure vandalism". -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 23:57, August 21, 2005 (UTC)
I am sorry the dispute between Ag and I has caused you any amount of wikistress. I'm looking to you for advice, however. Should I SD the page in question? I leave it there now because my big fat ego dosen't seem to be letting me yield to threats. Do you think I'm wrong to do this? I'll follow your advice. Hipocrite 00:01, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I don't see much point in keeping it. If a user is leaving, as Agriculture appears to be, then there's not much point in having it hanging around. If, however, you plan on some form of conflict-resultion (mediation, RfC, RFAr, etc.) in which you feel the page in question is material then it can always be undeleted (either by arbitrators or in response to a proper request for undeletion). If the latter is your intent, you may wish to keep an offline copy for reference (talk pages, like the rest of wikipedia, are GFDL, so you're quite entitled to do so). -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 00:14, August 22, 2005 (UTC)
Thank you. Can you speedy it? Hipocrite 00:18, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be better if another admin were to do so. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 00:21, August 22, 2005 (UTC)
Understood. You have a good evening, now. Hipocrite 00:23, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

[edit]
Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Devil's Beef Tub, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.
