- If you need help, post a question at the Help Desk
- Follow the Wikipedia:Simplified Ruleset
- Eventually, you might want to read the Manual of Style and Policies and Guidelines.
- Remember Wikipedia:Neutral point of view
- Explore, be bold in editing pages, and, most importantly, have fun!
Good luck!
OBE
[edit]I just saw your note about OBE on my friend Blankfaze's talk page. I'm just dropping a note to second no OBE in the title. See Julie Goodyear to have a sample in mind. Mike H 16:01, Jul 10, 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks. I have had a look at that page. I have just returned from a short holiday and will be working on Arlene's page this week. I still need to check a few facts but she is in Las Vegas atm. --Martin TB 13:40, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit]thanks, Martin: for leaping right in a helping wikify my Jules Guerin effort. I saw a need for it when I ran into a RED Jules Guerin. elsewhere, Lincoln Memorial , and sort of threw it together. In fact it's not done yet, so perhaps you can have at it again? Carptrash 20:33, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I'll be happy to help. I'm still getting to know how many wiki-links to put in which is why I only did the obvious ones. Martin TB 20:47, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Image widths
[edit]Well... "regulation" is a bit of a joke/exaggeration on my part, but there is a general guideline that most images should be 225px wide, unless there's some special reason. It's only a guideline though: feel free to break it if it improves an article. However, the use of similar widths for images tends to give an unobtrusive neatness to the layout of articles; for example, if all album covers are 225px wide, they all look nice and regular. -- The Anome 18:15, Nov 11, 2004 (UTC)
Image permission
[edit]Hi Martin, getting permission for the image would be great, but make sure you ask for permission to use it under the terms of the GFDL. Images with permission granted only for Wikipedia are likely to be deleted. It needs to freely usable by reusers of Wikipedia's content.
You could put a copy of the email on the image description page, although perhaps something more organised should be started, such as storing it in one of the non-public mailing lists. If you get the permission via email, try forwarding it to info-en@wikimedia(dotorg) and it could be saved in there. Angela. 23:42, Nov 11, 2004 (UTC)
Note: Boxed divisions originally posted on User talk:ScudLee#Kate Bush A dilemma
I have made a start on her albums, uploaded album covers, putting in track listings etc. I have now got a dilemma.
She released a series of compilation albums with the same name: This Woman's Work Vol.s I & II and then released those 2 vols. as a This Woman's Work boxed set (96 tracks!). What should I do on the album page? Should I show the box set cover in the album box, with the complete list of tracks to the left, or should I have 2 wiki album boxes (vol. I & Vol. II - with appropriate track lists for each vol.) possible separated into two lvl 2 headings, followed by the third lvl 2 heading for the boxed set? If the latter, I assume that I won't need to add a track list unless it's different (I haven't checked yet). I lean towards the latter option but am ready to comply with 'procedure'. :=} -- Martin TB 14:01, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)I don't think there's any hard and fast rules. It might be simplest to have the one albumbox and a lvl 2 "Track listing" with two lvl 3 "Volume I" & "Volume 2", especially if the details are going to be nearly identical. Just remember to put the release dates for the original releases, and not the boxset, in the table. But really, just do it the way you think will look best, if it doesn't you can always change it after. You could, of course, just do two separate articles, one for each volume, and then just mention that each was also in a boxset with the other, if you wanted. (Oh, and song titles should go in "quotes" not italics ;) - 16:28, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC) Lee (talk)
- OK I'll work on it later. Re: double-quotes (italics) vs quote marks " I am now very confused. I have been working on the double-quotes section of wiki syntax All book and film titles have to be in italics. As does the album name in the wiki album box. Surely continuity would suggest that song titles should also be in italics too? --Martin TB 17:04, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Well, I can't offer much in the way of justification for the decision regarding song titles, I can only point to Wikipedia:WikiProject Music#Albums, bands, and songs#4 as the place where it's located (it's also mentioned at Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums#Style). - 17:28, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC) Lee (talk)
- NP, I'll wikify the entries I have done so far to comply with Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums#Style. Many thanks --Martin TB 18:36, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Great work on the Album articles. I'm glad to see they have finally been created. I'm also curious: Any chance your user name relates to Neil Gaiman's character Martin Ten-Bones? ~ Kalki 18:26, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I've just read your reply. You have won my abiding envy if you were at Kate's Hammersmith performances. I too, have generally avoided writing much about Kate here because I know it would be hard to even pretend to be "objective": My esteem for her is beyond all words. Though I admire many musical artists, for me, there is no one who comes close to having her ability for creating works that deeply touch the soul. ~ Kalki 19:03, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Recording engineers
[edit]Note: Boxed divisions originally posted on User talk:TUF-KAT#Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums
Just a quick question: I noticed that you are the original contributor to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums page, so I thought I'd ask you. I can't find a page to link Recording Engineers to. Has one been created? I have no idea what a recording engineer actually does, but I know that they're important to teh recording process. See The Kick Inside for example
Thanks --Martin TB 20:04, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)Sadly, I don't really know precisely what a recording engineer does either. My advice would be to make it a red link and hope someone who does fills it in. In the absence of that, some googling could probably turn up enough info for a stub, which hopefully someone will then expand upon. You could also make it a requested article and put it on recent changes next time one of the requests there needs to be rotated out.
WRT to the above question on why song titles go in quotes: I think the reason is that large-scale works like novels, newspapers and albums are italicized, whereas the constituent chapters, articles and songs are in quotes. Tuf-Kat 02:32, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reponse. I have found a wiki page which is related Audio engineering, and I am going to point the Recording engineer link there for the moment. However, I peronally feel that RE needs a page to itself. Check out Job desc. and Job desc. 2 -- Martin TB 10:28, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Religious festivals
[edit]Normally religiopus festivals would be ok, but the problem with Muslim religious festivals (not the fact that they're muslim) is that they're not fixed by date: thus it would have to be moved again for next year. I would say don't add it, but do bring it up at the village pump as something to be considered for future events. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 20:13, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
TOC
[edit]Hi Martin, I hope you don't mind but I have moved your question (slightly refactored) to Wikipedia talk:Section so more people will comment on it. You might to advertise the discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) as well. I do prefer the TOC to be floating right, but this needs to be applied consistently, and automatically, not manually through adding HTML to articles. Angela. 17:21, Nov 15, 2004 (UTC)

[edit]Yes, you need to create a page at User:Martin TB/monobook.css. Feel free to copy anything from my stylesheet, as most of it was borrowed from other users anyway. :) More information on what you can do with a stylesheet can be seen on meta at Help:User style, and additional examples of what users are using the style sheets for can be seen at the m:Gallery of user styles. Kate Bush
[edit]The allmusic page is merely a bad organization of the information. Notice that the allmusic entry for the original 1990 release of the full box set has no track listing at all -- this is because they created separate pages for discs seven and eight. They didn't, and still don't, exist as individual releases apart from the box set. Trust me, I tried at the time to find the rarities discs without dropping $150 on a box set that included six albums I already had. This discography, this one and this one are just three discographies which note no separate release of the rarities discs alone. Bearcat 17:49, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)
No worries. I've found that allmusic.com can occasionally be a less-than-entirely-reliable resource (outright mistakes, or things that are just organized strangely), so I've learned to double-check against fan page listings if I notice that something seems off. Bearcat 19:38, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Last night
[edit]Just a note to say that it was really lovely meeting up with you in Holborn last night. I got the impression you were rather drunk by the time you left so I hope you got home safely. I look forward to meeting up at some point in the future. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 08:21, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)
P.S. You've got a cute arse in those jeans... ;-p
- Eurgh. How hungover have I been today? Twas good to meet ya. Though I'm taking the Fifth on your arse. :o) — OwenBlacker 16:48, Dec 4, 2004 (UTC)
Well I have moved November 2004 in sports/mistake back to November 2004 in sports. The problem with moving Current sports events to the Nov 04 page now is that the history for Dec 1 to Dec 5 is also on the same page. Perhaps a note on the talk page of where to find the history would be a better idea? -- Graham ☺ | Talk 19:16, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- I'll be watching just in case, though after the excesses of the night before heaven only knows when I'll be able to get out of bed. By the way I've added you to my wikipals list because you're generally a nice person who hasn't shouted at me yet. I apologise for the nice arse quip, it's true but I was tired and I'm not usually as forward while fully alert... -- Graham ☺ | Talk 18:43, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)
The Humungous Image Tagging Project
[edit]Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)
Article Licensing
[edit]Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Non-free use disputed for Image:The_Kick_Inside_UK_cover.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:The_Kick_Inside_UK_cover.jpg. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 05:49, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Kate_Bush_The_Sensual_World.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Kate_Bush_The_Sensual_World.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 00:34, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Kate Bush This Woman's Work.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Kate Bush This Woman's Work.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Page titles
[edit]Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give The Global Lawyer a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into The Global Legal Post. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
