[edit]This article refers to Pope John XXIII, but it can't possibly be. Is it an alternative pope or something? I can't find any suitable candidates in the list of popes. Would someone who knows please correct it?
- With the benefit of historical hindsight, we now "know" that the man who thought himself Pope John XXIII was in actuality "Anti-pope" John XXIII, one Cardinal Baldassare Cossa (abt 1370 - November 22, 1419), who became leader of the Council of Pisa (the degree of which's legitimacy is disputed). -- Someone else 20:14 Apr 24, 2003 (UTC)
Hey, JTD -- I bet you get to this first! Deb 20:03 Apr 24, 2003 (UTC)
Heh heh. How did you know? Actually there were two Pope John XXIIIs. The first is generally but not universally regarded as an antipope. Oh and to make things more confusing, one of the earlier Pope Johns didn't exist. And one may have been a woman.
Technically, if the previous John XXIII was valid, the recent John XXIII should be called John XXIV. If he was an antipope, he was correctly named John XXIII. But if one of the previous Johns didn't exist, he should have been John XXII. And if one of the Johns was a woman, he could even be described as John XXI. Confusing, eh! - Not easy to "get one's head around" -- even when infallible and wearing a Papal Tiara! Deb 20:22 Apr 24, 2003 (UTC)
