Map requires updating
[edit]Since it was produced, the South Downs AONB and the East Hampshire AONB have ceased to exist and been succeeded - with different boundaries - by the larger South Downs National Park, the Cairngorms National Park has extended its territory considerably to the south and both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks have extended their territories such that they now meet one another. Also there is no such national park as the 'South York Moors' - it should be the 'North York Moors'. Perhaps Paul@wikitravel or some other party could be persuaded to provide an updated version of this lovely map. cheers Geopersona (talk) 18:27, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
- Still hopeful someone can update this map. cheers Geopersona (talk) 20:50, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
- And perhaps on a more up-to-date background than the pre-'74 counties? cheers Geopersona (talk) 17:19, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
Greater London Notional Park
[edit]The idea of a national park covering London was more of a profile-raising exercise for the green spaces of the capital than a serious attempt to add it to the family of British national parks. Indeed it was promoted as a 'notional' park. Geopersona (talk) 18:30, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
Remove table?
[edit]Since this content no longer constitutes a list for which tables are often used, I'm not sure there's much point to retaining a table - the remaining material - images, statistics and so forth would be better accompanying the text for the designated areas which sits below the table. What do others think? cheers
- I quite like the table since it provides a synoptic view of each National Park. However, it would not worry me if the images were moved to their relevant sections in the text so that the table could be greatly simplified and become less obtrusive. The text for each park currently reads like a travel guide and several are rather gushing in their approach. I guess the text ought to reflect the original designation reasons together with any other key points identified by the individual park authority. Map
[edit]The map is out of date as since 2016 the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales are larger than they were originally plus would it not be better to have a map of the current administrative or ceremonial areas rather than the historic counties. Penrithguy (talk) 18:26, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- Some of the shortcomings of this map were noted above - the boundaries of Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons are also incorrect and Cairngorms is rather larger than this map shows. I may yet see if I can provide anything better myself if nobody else does but it may not happen soon! thanks Geopersona (talk) 16:43, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
Describing restrictions on these designated landscapes
[edit]The lede currently has it that the UK's national parks are areas of outstanding landscape where habitation and commercial activities are restricted. That is unsatisfactory insofar as there is a very large amount of commercial activity conducted within the UK's national parks just as there is a large amount of habitation - consider the outdoor activity retail and adventure tourism operators within Snowdonia or the Lakes for starters). Without further detail (and yes this is the lede so expansion can take place elsewhere) the reader unfamiliar with the UK's national parks might think the habitation and commercial activity is much more restricted than it is. Settlements within national parks continue to grow, building still takes place, though planning restrictions are a little tighter than elsewhere and certain forms of development would not be expected to gain permission. We can equally say that habitation and commercial activities are restricted within the rest of the country - that too is true, without specifying the extent to which policies exert varying degrees of control over these matters. All that said, we've had open-cast mining[1], conifer afforestation, dual carriageway construction, erection of lines of pylons, HEP development and reservoir construction within various of the UK's national parks since their designation. We should find an improved, referenced description of the degree of protection afforded to these landscapes. thanks Geopersona (talk) 08:57, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- As it is in the lede, can we not simply say that developments of all sorts are subject to significantly more stringent controls than in other areas, and with special protection for those aspects which led to the designation of the area. Regards Velella Velella Talk 09:11, 13 June 2020 (UTC)
- Certainly, something along those lines. Geopersona (talk) 09:29, 13 June 2020 (UTC)

Table again
[edit]In the 'list of' section (4.2), I'm not really sure how useful the second column is which indicates 'wider region' Some of the links simply point to the article already linked in the previous column or else linked in the fourth column whilst others are only partly relevant. It could be improved - or it could be removed. Geopersona (talk) 05:26, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
