Please do not continue renumbering the Presidents. The way Presidental numbering is universally done is what we must show in Wikipedia. We do not redefine such things by our own logic, no matter how reasonable it might seem. -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 19:41, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Please stop renumbering the Presidents

As others have said many times before, it's not up to us to decide how to number the Presidents of the United States. Presidential numbering conventions are widely accepted norms that prevent conflicts like "Is Bush the 42nd or 43rd President?" from occurring. Here at Wikipedia, we don't try to change things like that. What if, say, an editor came along and decided the George W. Bush article should be titled "George Bush, Jr."? That kind of change wouldn't fly, because 99.99% of the world has agreed on George W. Bush as his name. Same with the ordering of the Presidents. If you don't like the way the Presidents are numbered, talk to the Library of Congress. If they, or the history profession in general, think you have a valid complaint, they'll change the ordering of the Presidents. THEN we can reflect that in our content. Wikipedia reports on the facts of the world; it doesn't introduce new ideas. For more information, see Wikipedia:No original research.
