Talk:History of Azerbaijan/Soviet Azerbaijan
The Soviet Azerbaijan region corresponds to the Albania region in old Greek sources, and the part north of the Kura river correponds to the Shervan country. In ancient times it was the home of Scythians; later it became a part of the Roman empire. In early third century most of its area was conquered by the Sassanid; in late seventh century it was taken by the Arabs; in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it was a part of Iran [Persia], and was then turned over to Russia according to the treaties of Golestan (1813) and Torkaman-Chay (1828). After the fall of the Tsar government, it was occupied by the Allied. The Ottoman forces occupied Baku in September, 1918 and named the whole region Azerbaijan, due to the similiarity of its Turkic speaking people with the dwellers of Iran's Azarbaijan. In April, 1920, a soviet regime was established in Baku. In December, 1936, Azerbaijan became one of the republics of the USSR.
