Retraction (from that sports ignoramus)
[edit]Never mind. I just found http://images.library.yale.edu/madid/oneItem.aspx?id=1772839&q=Stagg&q1=&q2=&qc1=&qc2=&qf1=&qf2=&qn=&qo=&qm=&qs=&sid=&qx= whose text states: "Stagg played football while at Yale as a freshman, and was on the University eleven in 1888 and 1889 as a graduate student." Coming from someone at Yale, that should be gospel. Right? Forgive me.
Question on Playing Career (from a sports ignoramus)
[edit]From Wikipedia Entry on All America Team: "Selection to an All-America team for high school and collegiate players, however, is honorary in nature, and All-America "teams" do not typically play any games as a unit, unlike many of the all-star teams. Therefore, to be an All-American does not constitute being on a team.
"The original use of the term "All-America" seems to have been in reference to a list of college football players who were regarded as the best at their respective positions. The first "All-America" team was the 1889 College Football All-America Team selected by Casper Whitney and published in This Week's Sports in association with Walter Camp.[1]"
...His degree was awarded 1888. He was probably through as an active player then. (Right?) So, he was not playing in 1889, much less for Yale. He was simply being honored for his college playing career while at Yale. Whereas, sidebar "Playing career" would indicate (to me) that he was still playing, for Yale, in 1889. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Australorp (talk • contribs) 01:25, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
Comment
[edit]Currently, in Arlington, VA, USA, a Boy Scout Troop runs an annual Alonzo Stagg Hike, allowing participants to cover up to 50 miles in 20 hours. This is based on Stagg's legendary hikes for his teams at the beginning of the practice season. Not sure if the current hike or the legendary ones fit into this entry. --Habap 21:32, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Pumping arms is an innovation?
[edit]I'm not sure if pumping your arms to run faster can really be seen as an innovation of pretty much anyone. Isn't it just a natural motion that is accentuated when running quickly? You could coach a focus on it, and concentrate on increasing it, but the phrasing right now makes it seem like everyone ran with their arms at their sides before Stagg (try that sometime =).
WikiProject class rating

Foundation
[edit]The Amos Alonzo Stagg Foundation Inc. exists but I am unable to find a website or information about it's history. I know it existed pre-1962. When President John Fitzgerald Kennedy issued his famous 50 mile hike challenge [1] the foundation gave awards, in the form of a bronze medallion [2], to those who completed the hike in less than 12 hours. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arkansascajun (talk • contribs) Mar 18, 2008

Resignation. Why?
[edit]Is there any historical insight as to the reason the NCAA asked him to retire? This seems like a big piece of the story that is missing. DFS (talk) 22:46, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
